Andrea Reinkemeyer enjoys exploring sonic representations of landscapes and photographs through music. Her research focuses on the interaction of music with extra-musical impulses from the visual and natural world; interests in technology, photography, hiking, science, memory, and art complement these explorations and have taught her to carefully observe how sound reacts with its environment. Recurring themes from her native region, the Pacific Northwest, play an important role in her music as well as the infusion of modal mixture, driving rhythmic structures, and long melodic lines. Her music has been described as, "haunting," "compelling and adventurous."
Dr. Reinkemeyer is the Composer-in-Residence with the Plymouth Symphony's, "The Composer in Me!" outreach program for fifth graders in the Plymouth-Canton Schools (Michigan). While on the music faculty at Bowling Green State University, she taught composition, theory and technology. Dr. Reinkemeyer has mentored public school students through a community outreach program with The Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings, the Michigan Mentorship Program, and as the composer-in-residence at Burns Park Elementary School. While earning graduate degrees in music composition from the University of Michigan, she was the recipient of a Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship, Rackham Regent's Fellowship, Christine Rinaldo Memorial Scholarship, and Graduate Student Instructor position in electronic music composition. As an undergraduate at the University of Oregon, she received both the Ruth Lorraine Close Musical Fellows and Outstanding Creativity in Composition Awards. Her primary composition teachers include: Michael Daugherty, Bright Sheng, Susan Botti, Evan Chambers, James Aikman, Robert Kyr, Jack Boss, and Harold Owen.
Dr. Reinkemeyer has had performances both nationally and internationally of her music, by the American Composers Orchestra Underwood New Music Readings, North-South Chamber Orchestra, Great Noise Ensemble, Sonict New Music Ensemble, Susquehanna University New Music Ensemble, University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra, and the Pacific Rim Gamelan. Her electroacoustic music has been performed at the SEAMUS Conference, Spark Electronic Music Festival, Electronic Music Midwest Festival, University of Central Missouri Festival, and Threshold Electronic Music Festival. She has also enjoyed recent collaborations with and commissions from: H. Robert Reynolds and The Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings, Miller Asbill and the Texas Tech University Concert Band, Jeffrey Heisler and the Primary Colors Trio, The Wild Swan Theater, Iowa Music Teachers' Association, Jay Bordeleau, Carol Jacobsen, Patricia Olynyk, Alan Huckleberry, Tayva Turner, and Kathryn Hallor.
