Judith Shatin’s music “…allows the imagination to have a field day…” according to The New Music Connoisseur. Twice a fellow at the Rockefeller Center in Bellagio, she has received four NEA fellowships and grants from the American Music Center, Meet the Composer, the New Jersey State Arts Council, and the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Her music was the subject of a two-season retrospective, sponsored by the Lila Wallace-Readers Digest Arts Partners program. That project culminated with her evening-length folk oratorio, Coal, for which she wrote her own libretto and harvested sounds in Eaglesnest coal mine in Twilight, West Virginia.
Shatin is drawn to timbral and structural exploration, and often combines acoustic and digital elements. The results can be heard in Elijah’s Chariot, for string quartet and electronics, commissioned and toured world-wide by the Kronos Quartet; or in For the Birds for amplified cello and electronics made from birdsong. Shatin also develops interactive technologies, as in Tree Music (2003), for interactive computer music installation; Sea of Reeds for amplified clarinet with PVC tubing and live electronics, toured extensively by clarinetist F. Gerard Errante; and Kairos for flute and live electronics, performed by Patricia Spencer at the Beijing International Computer Music Conference. Her lighthearted piece, The Wendigo, commissioned by the San Francisco Girls Chorus and scored for treble chorus and electronics, was performed at the World Music Days in Slovenia in 2003. Some recent pieces, such as Singing the Blue Ridge, for mezzo, baritone, orchestra and electronics made from wild animal sounds, have focused on the environment. Singing the Blue Ridge was commissioned by Wintergreen Performing Arts through Americans for the Arts for a major project, Preserving the Rural Soundscape. Shatin led sound walks, gave improvisation classes, and worked with local civic groups, using art to create civic dialogue.
Music for acoustic ensembles continues to hold an important place in Shatin’s oeuvre. Recent pieces include The Jabberwocky (TTBB, 2006), commissioned by the Virginia Glee Club; Clave (fl, cl, sax, vln, vla, vc, pno, perc, 2005), commissioned by the newEar Ensemble; Amulet (treble chorus, 2003), premiered by the New York Treble Singers; and Run (piano quartet, 2001), commissioned by the Currents Ensemble. Shatin has also been commissioned by groups such as the Ash Lawn Opera, Barlow Foundation, Chamber Music Conference of the East, Core Ensemble, Kronos Quartet, National Symphony, Jane Franklin Dance, Monticello Trio and the University of Virginia. She has also served as faculty at the Chamber Music Conference of the East and the Wellesley Composers Conference. Shatin’s music is in demand internationally, with performances ranging from the World Music Days in Slovenia, to a recent tour of her Fledermaus Fantasy in Japan, and premieres in Denmark and Russia. Her music is frequently featured at such as the Aspen, Grand Teton, Autumn Warsaw, West Cork and many others.
Recent CD’s include Piping the Earth on the Capstone label (CPS-8727) and Dreamtigers on Innova (innova 613). Residencies include La Cité des Arts, Bramshaus, Mishkan Amanim, MacDowell, Virginia Center for the Arts and Yaddo. Her music is performed worldwide, with upcoming performances in Denmark, Mexico and Russia as well as numerous venues in the U.S. An advocate for contemporary music, Shatin has served as President of American Women Composers, on the boards of the League of Composers/ISCM and of the American Composers Alliance and currently serves as a member of the advisory board of the International Alliance for Women in Music. Educated at Douglass College (AB, Phi Beta Kappa), The Juilliard School (MM, Abraham Ellstein Prize) and Princeton University (PhD), She is currently William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor and Director of the Virginia Center for Computer Music at the University of Virginia. For more information, visit www.judithshatin.com.
