American composer Robert E. Cucinotta has been writing concert and theater music for over thirty-five years. He gained recognition early in his career for his percussion music which has been performed at the Smithsonian, Merkin Hall, Bargemusic and on college recitals in the U.S., Ireland and Australia.
Born in Brooklyn in 1949, he received his undergraduate and graduate training at the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College where he studied composition, electronic and computer music with Jacob Druckman, Robert Starer and Charles Dodge. As the first classical guitar major at the conservatory, he studied performance with guitarist/lutenist Pat O'Brien and pianist Paul Jacobs. He was a member of the music faculty of CUNY New York City College of Technology from 1974-1983 and was co-director of the New and Newer Music series in NYC between 1983-1985.
Performances of his concert works include those by the Staten Island Symphony, Brooklyn Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble, the 21st Century Consort, guitarist David Starobin, flutist Andrew Bolotowsky and percussionists Jonathan Haas, Ray Marchica, Roberto Oliveira, Brian Willson and Gary France.
His recent compositions include Invocation, for marimba & string orchestra (2010); Divertimento for Mr. Brooks, for flute, clarinet, piano & double bass (2009); As You Like It, for baritone & orchestra (2008), and Prologue, Masque, and Lament, for string orchestra (2007). His Tango quasi una fantasia, for piano (2006) was premiered by pianist Justin Kolb at the 2009 Belleayre and Mohonk Mountain Music Festivals.
His contributions to theater include incidental and electronic music for the Open Eye Theater productions of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream (1997), Romeo and Juliet (2000), As You Like It (2008) and The Tempest (2010). His most recent work (2010) is the music and sound design for a production by the Shandaken Theatrical Society of Jules Feiffer's play, Little Murders. A concert version of Little Murders for vibraphone, piano, FX was premiered at the CUNY Grad Center by the Macaulay Chamber Players in May, 2011.
Robert Cucinotta is a member of ASCAP, the American Composers Forum, the Dramatists Guild, and the Advisory Board of the Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice. He has been published by Lang Percussion and Kirkside Music (ASCAP).
