Currently composer in Residence with the Minnesota Orchestra, a position he has held since 1983. His works for orchestra include: Concerto For Orchestra, Soliloquy For Orchestra, Ordway Overture, Translucent Landscapes, Seven Short Pieces, and Soliloquy. For chamber orchestra: Reflections and Spectra. His orchestral works have received performances from the Minnesota Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Oakland Symphony, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Houston Symphony, American Symphony Orchestra, and others. In addition to his works for orchestra, Paulus also has three operas to his credit. The Village Singer, The Postman Always Rings Twice, and The Woodlanders were all commissioned and premiered by the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. The Postman…also was the first American opera production ever presented at the Edinburgh Festival when the Saint Louis Opera Company performed it there in September, 1983. Paulus has received Guggenheim and NEA Fellowships as well as commissions from the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard, the Atlanta Symphpony, the Dale Warland Singers, and others. His Christmas cantata, So Hallow’d Is The Time was given its European premiere at the Aldeburgh Festival and has been recorded on the Pro Arte Label by the Plymouth Music Series of Minneapolis. Paulus is also active as Vice-President on the Board for the Minnesota Composers Forum, an organization that he co-founded.
