Long a collaborator with composers including Igor Stravinsky, Leonard Bernstein, Gunther Schuller and Philip Glass, Adrienne Albert began composing her own music in the 1990s. Her concert works have been performed throughout the United States, Europe, Thailand, China, Mexico, South America and South Africa. An award-winning contemporary woman composer, Adrienne has received numerous commissions in addition to a National Endowment for the Arts grant. Her most recent commissions include "Three for Two", three movements for Contrabass flute and other flutes by Peter Sheridan (2010), an as-yet untitled work for baritone saxophone and harp (2010), "Musescapes" for piano trio, co-commissioned by Carol S. Gee and The Newstead Trio (2009) and premiered by The Newstead Trio in April 2009, "Between the dark and daylight" for Pacific Serenades (2007), "Americana" for flute and strings (2008) by Chamber Music Palisades, "Wind Tides" for trombone and piano, commissioned by Andrew Malloy (2009), and "Courage for Winds" (2009) commissioned by a consortium of Wind Bands from the Inland Empire. Ms. Albert was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and the American Composers Forum for the Continental Harmony Project 2006 in Alaska. She is a recipient of the prestigous ACME Award and several Mu Phi Epsilon Music Fraternity grants. Ms. Albert has been Composer-In-Residence for The Wagner Ensemble and for The Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra who commissioned two orchestral works, "Courage" (2000) which has been performed all across the country and “Western Suite” which was premiered by LADSO on the West Coast and has had numerous performances by The Virginia Symphony Orchestra, The Hewlett-Packard Symphony Orchestra, The Old Post Road Orchestra, The Carson City Symphony Orchestra, The Kenai Peninsula Orchestra in Alaska and the Conway Symphony Orchestra in Central Arkansas. Other commissions include Circadia, a bassoon sonata commissioned by bassoonist, Carolyn Beck, several works for noted Saxophonist, Doug Masek. Her popular work,"Doppler Effect”, originally composed for flute, viola and harp has now been transcribed for 13 different instrumental trios.. Her ”Animalogy” for Woodwind Quintet won the Aeros Competition in 2008 and was performed in Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hallthat year. She has received consecutive ASCAP Awards for the past 12 years, and has received several Music Copying Assistance Program grants. She received honorable mention in the Aeron Flute Competition in 2009. The American Jazz Philharmonic commissioned Ms. Albert to compose "Serenade For Alto Sax, Trumpet and Orchestra" for the Henry Mancini Institute at which she conducted the premiere at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach, CA. Ms. Albert received another Meet The Composers Grant for her orchestral piece, "Images" at which she also conducted the premiere performance. As the original singer of Stravinsky’s last completed work, “The Owl and The Pussycat”, Adrienne decided in 2010 to compose her own song to the Edward Lear poem. The song was premiered to critical acclaim by Arietha Lockhart, coloratura soprano and Mary Au, piano in New York in March 2010 and was performed in May, 2010 in Los Angeles by Diana Tash, mezzo-soprano of the Los Angeles Opera and noted pianist, Armen Guzelimian. She is currently working on “A Choral Quilt of Hope”, a work based on the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights with collaborator, Susan Suntree (2010). Other current projects include a saxophone quartet, a song cycle based on the poetry of Edward Lear, and a CD recording of recent chamber works.
A graduate of UCLA in music and the child of professional violinists, Ms. Albert began studying the piano at age 4 and composition at 10. She studied piano with Jacob Gimpel and Aube Tzerko in Los Angeles, with Joanna Graudan at the Aspen Music School and later composition with Stephen Mosko and orchestration with Albert Harris.
Her vocal career began while attending UCLA, singing with The Gregg Smith Singers and The Roger Wagner Chorale. Igor Stravinsky discovered her “perfect boy alto” voice and hired her to be the alto soloist on his "Mass". She worked with the Maestro on numerous occasions and recorded three more solo recordings with him including his "Four Russian Songs" For Flute, Harp, Guitar, and Voice", "Cantata", and Stravinsky’s last song, "The Owl And The Pussycat" with Robert Craft accompanying. Other solo recordings include songs of Charles Ives with The Columbia Symphony and Phillip Glass’s opera, The Photographer, with Glass conducting.
Ms. Albert enjoyed a long working relationship with Leonard Bernstein and was both singer and contractor on the celebrated recording of his "Mass", (the premiere of which opened the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC) and West Side Story on which she performed with Kiri Te Kanawa and Jose Carreras. Ms. Albert sang at Bernstein’s 70th birthday celebration in Tanglewood under the baton of John Williams, and at Avery Fisher Hall with Gunther Schuller and the New York Philharmonic in a premiere of Schuller’s Symphonia for Four Voices and Orchestra. As a studio singer in New York and Los Angeles, Ms. Albert has worked with such diverse artists as Pablo Casals, Benny Golson, Dave Grusin, Lieber and Stoller, Zubin Mehta, Frank Sinatra, and Michael Tilson Thomas. Her eclectic musical background ranges from avant- 20th century vocal and choral music to folk music, jazz, and popular music.
Ms. Albert is the current Co-President of the Los Angeles Alumni chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon Music Fraternity, a member of SAG, AFTRA, The American Music Center, L.A. chapter of the American Composers Forum, International Alliance for Women In Music, The Dominant Club and ASCAP. Her music is published by Kenter Canyon Music (ASCAP) and some of her works can also be purchased through TrevCo Music and Theodore Front Music Literature.
