Gerald Starlight is a member of the
American Composers Forum in Saint Paul, Minnesota, he is a composer and performer of music for shakuhachi, the japanese bamboo flute, his compositional style is based on improvisations of themes and variants utilizing a wide range of portamento ornamentation, microtonal effects produced by various degrees of note bending and sliding, along with asymmetrical tempi that are predominately slow to moderate, creating moods reflecting the natural world. An integral feature of his pieces are the poetic titles; Under The Sky, On Floating Mist, Moon Over Lily Pond, Through The Pines, Echoes Of Wild Geese, Return To Silence, Yellow Leaves, With Changing Clouds, The Night Wind Remembers, Many White Mountains. These ten composition titles appear on his 2009 CD/album 'Under The Sky, Gerald Starlight, Shakuhachi', recorded at Harvestworks studios in Soho, New York, a digital media organization that encourages the use of electronic technology in audio artworks. In a review that was featured online in the June 2009 issue of creationsmagazine.com
by Mark Maxwell Abushady, he wrote "Gerald Starlight plays all instruments on this album, which most prominently features the shakuhachi, a japanese flute. The music is haunting, soulful and meditative in quality. Evidenced in many cuts is an intimacy that almost begs a contemplative state of the listener.
Other cuts, such as Echoes Of Wild Geese, with a raucous appearance of said geese intertwined with a number of
instrumental sounds, are livelier. Alto recorder, Tibetan horn, a restrained use of synthesizer, singing bowls, Tibetan bells, chanting Hindu monks, as well as various sounds from nature contribute to the fabric of this offering, and round out this fine album by an accomplished musician." In late 2009 Starlight composed 'Autumn Rain', this CD/single is a homage to the rainy season. Starlight once again performs on all instruments that include the shakuhachi, bamboo wind chimes and brazilian rainsticks, in addition to the sounds of nature consisting of thunder, crickets and rain, rendering this multi-layered composition. In a note from Steve Gorn, renowned bansuri flutist, he commented, "I really enjoyed your new CD/single, beautiful rain storm vibe, great production and fine shakuhachi playing. Your pacing and the mood you create is really special". An interesting note about this piece is that the project consultant Anthony Vincent Moran assisted in the completion of this production, he is known for his audio work with film director Stanley Kubrick. Autumn Rain was recorded at Harvestworks studios in Soho, New York.
Starlight's project in 2010 was a series of thirty compositions in MP3 format titled 'Shakuhachi by Starlight', comprised of solo and multitracked works. James Nyoraku Schlefer, master of shakuhachi wrote, "the music is very soothing". In 2011 Starlight released a CD/single titled 'Cloudscapes', a poem by Gerald Starlight narrated by Mona Golabek set to music by William Grant Still (1895-1978), featuring his piece Serenade performed by The Manhattan Chamber Music Orchestra conducted by Richard Auldon Clark. Cloudscapes was premiered in a worldwide broadcast on radio station WQXR.org from New York City in 2002 as a special tribute to New York City in the aftermath of 9/11.
The 2011 CD commemorates the 10th anniversary. Gerald Starlight studied shakuhachi with Shoji Hagiwara of Yokohama, Japan, he was a pupil of the late Goro Yamaguchi, today Hagiwara is one of Japan's most respected players of shakuhachi. For those interested in the history of the shakuhachi, players, teachers and learning manuals, etc., go to shakuhachi.com, it is an invaluable resource of information that encompasses all subject matter pertinent to the instrument, most notably are the beautiful Tai Hei shakuhachi made by Monty H. Levenson,

RESUME & ARTIST STATEMENT
Gerald Starlight / shakuhachi, Japanese bamboo flute
www.amc.net/geraldstarlight geraldstarlight@live.com
Gerald Starlight began study of the shakuhachi in 2001 with Shoji Hagiwara of Yokohama Japan, resulting in the attainment of the level of Dai-Shihan, grand master of shakuhachi, afterwards this led to the creation of his CD/album Under The Sky, released in 2009, recorded at Harvestworks studios, Soho, New York, the album consists of ten compositions composed by Starlight. The unique feature of the music is that Starlight performs on all instruments on this multitracked recording. In late 2009 Starlight composed and performed on all instruments once again on a multitracked CD/single titled Autumn Rain, it consists of a single composition attributed to the rainy season, recorded at Harvestworks studios, Soho, New York, released in 2010; also in the same year a project of thirty compositions titled Shakuhachi By Starlight in MP3 format features Starlight's composing skills and improvistations on solo and multitracked works that exceed the limitations of the written score. In 2011 Gerald Starlight released Cloudscapes, featuring the poem Cloudscapes written by Starlight with narration by Mona Golabek set to music composed by William Grant Still (1895-1978), his piece Serenade performed by The Manhattan Chamber Music Orchestra featuring flute, clarinet, harp and string quintet conducted by Richard Auldon Clark, the premiere was broadcast worldwide on radio station WQXR.org in New York City on March 4th, 2002 as a special tribute to New York City, following the events of September 11th, 2001. The 2011 CD commemorates the 10th anniversary of 9/11. In late 2011 a healing arts CD/album was released titled The Reiki Journey - Guided Meditations for Mindful Living by reiki master Ginny Mackles and featuring Gerald Starlight playing shakuhachi, plus tradition works for shakuhachi and koto.
The aforementioned recordings Under The Sky, Autumn Rain and Cloudscapes are in the Rogers and Hammerstein Archives of Recorded Sound in the Performing Arts Library at Lincoln Center in New York City and his MP3 collection of thirty recordings Shakuhachi By Starlight are part of the AMC Online Library at the American Music Center in Chelsea, New York City. The music of Gerald Starlight is currently on internet radio broadcasts around the world.
Starlight gave his New York debut recital at Cami Hall 165 West 57th Street, New York City, has appeared at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York and has performed in numerous venues including radio and television, in addition to being awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts associated with Meet The Composer programs.
Gerald Starlight is an accomplished musican, composer, performer, artist and producer of his own independent recording label Nirvana Music; recognized as being a peerless innovative shakuhachi player, he is also known for playing a vast number of other instruments and exploring the limitless possibilties of music that reaches beyond classification.
In 2011 Gerald Starlight offered his music to further relief efforts in Japan in the aftermath of the triple crisis of tsunami, earthquake and nuclear disaster, with all proceeds going to Japan Society benefiting the victims of the tragedy.
"That which is inexpressible can only be realized and brought into being through a transmigratory journey originating from within the soul." - Gerald Starlight
