AUTUMN 2007 COMPOSER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM GRANTS ANNOUNCED

-  $33,555 Awarded for Support for Production of Performance Materials -

NEW YORK – The American Music Center (AMC) is pleased to announce grant awards totaling $33,555 to 27 composers through the autumn round of the Composer Assistance Program (CAP). The awardees are American composers ranging in age from 27 to 67, residing in 11 states.

AMC awards more than $100,000 annually to composers to assist in the production of performance materials for premiere performances. Among the ensembles and organizations premiering or featuring public readings of CAP-supported works this round are the Chorus pro Musica, Delaware Valley Chamber Orchestra, Flute Force, Minnesota Orchestra, Saratoga Chamber Players, Verdehr Trio and Volti. A complete list of awardees and performers is attached.

“Generations of composers have received a small but critical boost from the Composer Assistance Program,” said Joanne Hubbard Cossa, Chief Executive Officer of the American Music Center. “AMC’s aim is to help composers at a critical point in their career advancement, and the number of artists receiving this direct support and the breadth of the performing ensembles performing the new works vividly demonstrate how vital CAP remains.”

Since 1962, the Composer Assistance Program has provided over $2 million in support to American composers. Over 1,400 composers have received a CAP award at some point in their career, including Gordon Beeferman, Eve Beglarian, David Del Tredici, Gabriela Lena Frank, Anne LeBaron, Steve Reich and Elliott Sharp. Composers must be members of the American Music Center to apply for an award. The Composer Assistance Program has been endowed by The Helen F. Whitaker Fund and The Aaron Copland Fund for Music. Current funding for CAP is provided by the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, The Edward T. Cone Foundation and the Reed Foundation. For more information, contact Deborah Horne, Director of Membership and New Music Services.

The American Music Center, founded in 1939 by a consortium led by Aaron Copland and Howard Hansen, is the nation’s first information and support center for new music, and has a long history of providing financial support to the field. Today, AMC has almost 2500 members in 50 states. AMC’s vanguard programs also include an award-winning web magazine for new American music (NewMusicBox.org), an online radio station playing all American music (CounterstreamRadio.org), an Online library of scores and recordings of some 43,000 works of American music (AMC.net;  see “Explore American Music”), and a Professional Development Program offering workshops for those pursuing careers in new music. AMC also publishes Opportunity Update, a monthly listing of opportunities in new music including calls for scores, competitions, and other information. Together, these activities further the Center’s mission of building a national community for new American music.
