Taking Note: A Major Study of New Music in the United States

The American Music Center (AMC) and the American Composers Forum (ACF) are the two largest membership service organizations for composers and other new music professionals in the country.  In an effort to better understand the ever-changing landscape of new music and those who create it, the AMC and ACF have joined together, with the help and advice of Meet the Composer (MTC) to conduct a new research study to collect quantitative data on the breadth and depth of new music activity throughout the United States .

The goal of the study is:

  • To better understand how the lives of composers and artists performing new music as well as audiences for new music have (and have not) changed in the past few years, and what will be needed to support new music in the next few years.
  • To discern ways in which we can focus and broaden our service and advocacy in the field of American music.

The study, concentrated in ten locales across the country, will be administered by the Research Center for Arts and Culture (RCAC) at Columbia University’s Teachers College. Through in-depth interviews and focus groups, information and data will be gathered from major presenters, ensembles, academic institutions, publishers, licensing organizations, service organizations, recording companies, funders, and composers, each of whom has a major stake in the future of new music.

A preview of the results of this joint study will be hosted by Joanne Hubbard Cossa, CEO of AMC, John Nuechterlein, President and CEO of ACF, and presented by Joan Jeffri of RCAC on Friday, June 13 at 4pm.  Questions and discussion will follow.
